Social media influencers have been in the spotlight of late for all the wrong reasons. After the Vanity Fair takedown of the seemingly perfect world of Byron Bay’s mumfluencers last week, it appears the halcyon days of blindly clicking ‘like’ are now being questioned.

For instance, take this bizarre yet intriguing story of beauty blogger/influencer Lillee Jean, which turned into a scolding hot tea-party over on Reddit’s Beauty Guru Chatter.

The subreddit describes itself as “a space to discuss beautubers and beauty related content from brand representatives and other social media influencers.” The 112k members are ready to talk/type their love of everything beauty, discuss whether influencer-spruiked products are any good, engage in the high stakes, high drama of their favourite social media beauty gurus, and takedown influencers they deem to be dishonest.

Which, judging by a thread on the subreddit about a study that claims that more than half of UK Instagram Influencers have engaged in some sort of questionable activity (and the percentage seems even higher for the US). There’s a lot of glitter fodder for the makeup cannon.
